Dry & Sensitive Skin Guide

Understanding Your Skin

Dry skin naturally produces fewer lipids (the natural oils that protect the skin's surface). As a result, its skin barrier is more fragile and allows moisture to escape more easily. This can leave your skin feeling tight, less supple, prone to redness, or more reactive to external factors such as cold weather, wind, or certain skincare products.

It's also important to understand the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin. Dry skin is a skin type, meaning it naturally lacks oils. Dehydrated skin is a temporary skin condition caused by a lack of water. Any skin type, even oily skin, can become dehydrated. However, dry skin is often dehydrated as well.

The goal of a suitable skincare routine is therefore twofold: to replenish the skin with moisture and strengthen the skin barrier so it can retain that moisture throughout the day. Well-hydrated skin feels more comfortable, looks healthier, and is less prone to tightness and irritation.

Best Practices

Choose a gentle cleanser
After cleansing, your skin should never feel tight or uncomfortable. If it does, your cleanser may be too harsh and could weaken your skin barrier over time.

Layer hydration
One of the core principles of Korean skincare is applying several lightweight hydrating products before your moisturizer. For example, a hydrating toner provides the first layer of moisture, followed by a serum for additional hydration. Finally, a moisturizer helps lock that moisture into the skin, keeping it comfortable for longer. This approach is often more effective, and more pleasant, than relying on a single rich cream.

Look for ingredients that support the skin barrier
Ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and Centella Asiatica are widely appreciated for their ability to hydrate the skin, strengthen the skin barrier, and soothe feelings of discomfort.

Introduce new products gradually
When adding a new product to your routine, wait a few days before introducing another one. This makes it easier to see how your skin reacts and identify the product responsible if irritation occurs.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Washing your face with very hot water.
  • Over-exfoliating or using overly potent active ingredients.
  • Assuming that a rich cream alone is enough when your skin also lacks hydration.
  • Frequently changing your skincare routine without giving your skin time to adjust.
